Peyton and Claire this is your gggg grandfather.

My father told this story to me, (Brents Dickinson Jr.) which was told to him by his grandfather, Joseph Underwood Rogers, about his father John Thomas Rogers.

John T Rogers lived with his wife Olivia Lewis (see Olivia Lewis’ page). Rogers in a large brick home, along the road between Louisville and Nashville, on a hill that overlooked the Barren River.

One day John T Rogers saw a man trying to cross the Barren River that was returning home from the Civil War, who had only one leg. It had been shot off by a cannon ball during the war.  John T went across the river in a boat and brought him back across. He then put him in a wagon and took him home about 3 miles from   Becton in the Beaver Creek community. As it turned out this man was Samuel Anderson your ggg grandfather. Two generations later Samuel Anderson’s granddaughter (Gwendolyn Holman, my mother) married the great grandson (Brents Dickinson Jr., my father) of John T Rogers. Samuel Anderson served under General Joseph H. Lewis, commander of the Orphan Brigade (CSA), who was the brother of Olivia Lewis Rogers. Small world.
